Israel: 'Faulty' report on Iran may spark war

Tue Dec 25, 2007 at 08:09:42 AM PDT

Official says Iran nuke weapons assessment casts doubt on U.S. intelligence

"The American misconception concerning Iran's nuclear weapons is liable to lead to a regional Yom Kippur where Israel will be among the countries that are threatened," Dichter said in a speech in a suburb south of Tel Aviv, according to his spokesman, Mati Gil. "Something went wrong in the American blueprint for analyzing the severity of the Iranian nuclear threat."

In Iran's shoes

Fri Nov 30, 2007 at 07:23:00 PM PDT

Those who argue for war with Iran place great emphasis on its supposed role in Iraq.  They say that Iran supports Iraqi insurgents and there is some evidence that Iran has provided support to some Shia insurgents.  But  Sunni insurgents who get their support from Saudi Arabia are responsible for far more American casualties than the Shia and no one is talking about war with Saudi Arabia. Even if all the charges are true, would we act any differently if we were in Iran's shoes?  And does it make sense to go to war with a country over behaviour that is not significantly different from our own?

The Administration is trying to make a case that Iran is more dangerous and more provocative than the Sunni insurgents to American interests in Iraq, when--if you look at the actual casualty numbers--the punishment inflicted on America by the Sunnis is greater by an order of magnitude...

Series Idea -- Countdown to War with Iran

Sun Nov 25, 2007 at 08:45:23 AM PDT

I would like to start a DailyKos series designed to monitor and protest our country's march toward war with Iran.  I picture it being something like SusanG's Diary Rescue series: a summary of diaries published during a specific time period having something in common.  In her case, her belief that the diary deserved more attention than it got from the community, in mine that the diary helps us understand Iran, its people, its government, or our government's policy toward it.  Additional details below.

Draft Gore petition index

Fri Oct 19, 2007 at 10:45:12 AM PDT

To use the index click on the number that corresponds to the page you want to look at.  Each page has fifty signatures so sigs 1-50 are on page 1, 51-100 are on page 2, etc.

1 2

Here are some sample signatures:

100 Eric W. TX We need you now more than ever, sir!

219 Eva K. WV Noone is as experienced, principled, and internationally respected. The country needs President Gore.

233 Chris W. PA If Gore doesn't run, we're screwed.

356 Richard F. MD I voted for you the last time you won.

Of course my favorite signature is this one, but I'm probably a little biased:

152365 Dale Read OH You the man!

Enjoy!

U.S. Marine deserts to Canada

Fri Dec 10, 2004 at 10:45:41 AM PDT

The Aljazeera story:
"I was faced with being deployed to Iraq to do what the infantry does, kill people, and I had no justification for doing so," said Hinzman.

Hinzman, his wife and two-year-old son arrived in Canada early this year, after deserting from his unit, an action which carries a maximum five-year jail term.

Full story  (Al jazeera)

A CBC story talks about the case Hinzman will be making for permanent asylum in Canada.

"We are allowed to argue that the conduct of the war on the ground is sufficiently outside the Geneva Conventions that Mr. Hinzman ought not to be associated with it. He should not be compelled to participate in an activity which is in violation of the Geneva Conventions," said lawyer Jeffrey House.

Of course there is Hinzman's own site.
